This childhood memoir, is set in Riverlea, a 'coloured' community in Gauteng, in the 50's and 60's. It look at life in a coloured community through the eyes of one cheeky, aware child and his interactions with his family, friends and peers. It shows the closeness of the community, the tragedies, misfortunes, and windfalls which are celebrated or mourned by all. More generally it portrays what it meant to be classified as coloured in South Africa at that time.
