Jonathan Kaplan

Jonathan Kaplan – or ‘JK’ as his friends call him – holds the record as the most capped international rugby referee of all time. A stellar career spanning 30 years took him all over the world and had him boarding an airplane a few times a month. Maybe it was the nomadic lifestyle. Maybe it was the women he did (or didn’t) meet. Maybe it was written in the stars. Or maybe it was just him … but JK found himself single, approaching 50, suddenly jobless and still without the sole thing he had always wanted and known he would one day have: a child of his own. Winging It tells the story of Jonathan Kaplan’s decision to have a baby by surrogate. Jonathan’s two-year fertility process and the subsequent birth of his son Kaleb are the pinnacle of what was in fact a lifelong foregone conclusion. Jonathan always wanted to have a family, but the route he chose to accomplish that, the opportunities he missed (or gave up) along the way, and the process whereby he eventually achieved it are unconventional, distinctly modern, sometimes controversial and quite riveting. Jonathan lives in Canada with his family.
