Children of the Palace

Ages 9 to 12
Paperback

Synopsis

To find the truth, they must defy the story

Clara and Emil have lived their whole lives inside the palace in the city of Velrossa, under the watchful eye of their father, the President. Within its walls, stories are power, and their father controls them all, broadcasting his perfectly crafted films across the nation.

Privilege and luxury are all the children have known, and while Clara can't help noticing the tiredness of the jumble of grey houses of the sprawling Greater City beyond the palace, she's learned not to question it. Father says the people are loyal. Content. Why would he lie? Never mind that the palace seems to have a way of drowning out the real truth. That books are removed from shelves, tutors gone from one day to the next. Father knows best, doesn't he?

But when Clara uncovers a photograph of her long-disappeared mother, and evidence of a film that her father ordered to be destroyed, the story she's always believed begins to fracture. As rebellions bubble beyond the palace walls, Clara must decide whether to protect the story she's been raised to believe, and the palace she has always called home, or risk everything to uncover the truth.
